The movement for the quality of government petitioned against the apparent appointment of the chairman of Shas. The petition states that he "misled the court" when he pledged not to return to public life. "If appointed, it will not be a question of if and when he commits a third crime, unless we then have a functioning law enforcement system to stop him"

The Movement for the Quality of Government petitioned the High Court of Justice today (Sunday) against the apparent appointment of Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri as minister. The movement even sought to cancel the plea agreement with him, because he "misled the court", claiming that he made a false representation, according to which he will retire from public life. "It was a mistake to let Derai return to the scene of the crime the first time, but to let him return the second time is complete madness and a loss of moral and moral sanity," said the chairman of the movement, lawyer Eliad Sharga.

"If Deri is appointed minister for the third time, it will no longer be a question of if and when he will commit a crime for the third time, unless we then have a functioning law enforcement system to stop him," added the lawyer.

"The High Court must intervene and prevent this disgrace, and cancel the plea agreement made with Aryeh Deri."

The proposed amendment to the Basic Law: The Government, known as the "Deri Law" and authorizing the appointment of the chairman of Shas as minister, is expressed by the addition of the words "de facto imprisonment".

According to the existing version, it is not possible to appoint a minister who was convicted of a crime and sentenced to prison if he was charged with defamation.

However, the law does not specify whether it is an actual prison term or only a conditional one, as Deri was sentenced to.

The purpose of the bill is to prevent the discussion before the chairman of the Central Election Commission, Judge Yitzhak Amit, who has the authority to determine whether there is defamation in Deri's case. The bill "bypasses" Judge Amit by stating that defamation will only be imposed on those who have been convicted of actual imprisonment.
